Lanzarote hotels and things to do on holiday

January 21st, 2010

The beautiful island of Lanzarote in the Canaries is well known for its incredible volcanic landscapes and breathtaking coastlines. Its stunning natural beauty is complemented by the many tourist activities and amenities on offer, from the restaurants, shops and clubs to top Lanzarote hotels. As a protected UNESCO site, there are various restrictions on the type and amount of development allowed on the island. This means that no high-rise apartments or condominiums are on the island and billboard advertising is not allowed. As a result, many Lanzarote hotels and villas tend to be more natural developments with enhanced privacy. In fact, many of the hotels offer so many amenities and such beautiful beaches that some visitors decide not to leave their resort. If you do decide to venture out, however, there are plenty of sights worth seeing.

Timanfaya National Park

Lanzarote’s Montañas del Fuego – or Fire Mountains – give this region of the island an almost martian look since the landscape is barren and desert-like. The mountains were created by volcanic eruptions in the 18th and 19th centuries that impacted this part of the island. There are plenty of rare plant species to marvel at in this fertile area and guided tours around the park will help you to make the most of the region – there is even the chance to view the landscape while riding a camel.

Jameos del Agua

Created by a volcanic eruption which took place over three thousand years ago, these caves have been turned into an underground complex, with a swimming pool, auditorium, restaurants, and gardens that have been designed to complement the natural look of the surrounding caves.

Lanzarote Aquarium

Get up close and personal with the sea life of the Canary Islands in this large, interactive aquarium. Native aquatic creatures, including warm water sharks, can be observed and interacted with in the aquarium’s three touching-pools.

Castillo de San Jose

This fortress was originally built to protect the island from pirates back in 1799 and is now a modern art gallery, including a restaurant with lovely views of the harbour.

With so many sights on offer, alongside the many restaurants, bars, shops and cheap hotels, your island holiday experience is guarenteed to be one to remember.

More flights mean more holiday opportunities in Lanzarote

December 8th, 2009

With the launch of new Aer Lingus flights to the popular Canary Island of Lanzarote, it’s the perfect time for an sunny getaway. British holidaygoers well appreciate the sunny climate of this beautiful island. As of October 25th 2009, the well known airline has started running flights between Gatwick and Lanzarote’s Arrecife airport three days a week, making year-round sunshine, stunning scenery and cheap Lanzarote hotels even more accessible than before.

The new route announcement follows news earlier in the year that the Spanish government will be offering discounts on airport taxes to airlines meeting certain criteria when flying to Spanish destinations. The new flights are the government’s latest attempt to fuel the thriving tourism economy, both on the islands and Spanish mainland. The tourism in Lanzarote, like many other European destinations, was hit hard last year after the turbulent down turn in the economy. Its airport saw a reduction of 3.3% in December 2008 compared with the same time the previous year, which raised concerns about the health of local tourism.

The new route between London and Lanzarote will no doubt be well received. Similarly, it is great news for eager sun-seekers too, as holidaymakers have the chance to enjoy a paradise island break at an affordable price. The prices for the new flights start at an affordable £34.99 one way, making it a great choice for your next holiday in the sun. There are great deals on Lanzarote hotels at the moment, making the holiday even more attractive. A bungalow for two in a four star resort, for example, costs as little as £14 per person per night this October, while all-inclusive hotels in Lanzarote can be found for around £27. So, with troubled financial times meaning great deals both in the air and on the ground, an autumn sunshine break is well within reach this year.
