Indulging in A Barbados Vacation

March 13th, 2010

A Barbados vacation on this beautiful Caribbean isle comes highly recommended, and there is plenty for the tourist to see and do.

Located to the north east of the South American continent, Barbados offers travelers a combination of unique culture, beautiful ocean and plenty of watersports. The island is divided into five separate regions, and, as each of them sport their own world class attractions and activities, tourists should make the most of their getaway and visit region in turn.

The local currency is the Bajan Dollar, although US Dollars are accepted throughout the island, and, given the island’s British heritage, the official language is English. The capital of the island is Bridgetown where visitiors will find plenty of duty free shopping and colonial architecture. Bridgetown is also home of the island’s cruise port where cruise liners dock for the day allowing visitors to explore this city. When visiting capital you will witness one of the oldest synagogues and a historic Parliament Building. You will also find the George Washington House and Garrison Savannah.

The city of Bridgetown should not be confused with the area of the same name, and “Bridgetown” is therefore also one of the five regions that the island is divided into. No Barbados vacation would be complete without a visit to the capital, however, and it is recommended that tourists make the city their home base while they tour the island. The centre of the island is much more nature filled with lush, green vegetation and offers attractions such as the Wildlife Reserve and Harrison's Cave.

For the watersports enthusiasts the island’s East Coast offers some of the best surfing and windsurfing facing the more active Atlantic Ocean. Those wishing to dare the island’s wild side should spend time at the small resort of Bathsheba, which is a windsurfing and surfing paradise. If you are new to the sport of surfing then its not recommended that you surf at Bathseba as this can be quite dangerous. Along the island West Coast you will find the calm Caribbean Sea and a wide variety of beachfront luxury accommodations. This coast is also home to the village of Holetown ideal for high-end shopping, fine dinning restaurants and island nightlife.

The Sir Grantley Adams International Airport is located in the island’s southern region and is a popular destination for flights from the USA, Canada and the UK. This area also offers tourists several luxury golf and country clubs, attractive holiday apartments as well as an almost perfect public transportation system. When vacation on the south coast of Barbados you should take the time to visit St Lawrence Gap for some authentic Bajan night life as well as the Graeme Hall Nature Reserve.

Indulging in a Barbados vacation is the perfect way to forget the disappointments and frustrations of everyday life, and everyone should treat themselves to this type of first-rate getaway once every couple of years.

Don’t do this in Barbados!

March 5th, 2010

Here is another one of those quirky articles that tries to help you with your holiday by offering you ideas on things you should avoid, or at least try to avoid doing that could ruin your holiday. Barbados is a party capital, and many people do not have any problems with taking advantage of this.

  • First and most definitely foremost, and this doesn’t just apply to the young people of the world, stay well away from nay drugs. If you are caught with anything here that is even remotely Illegal you won’t be in for a fun time, not to mention that the drugs on offer here could be a lot more violent compared to some that you may have access to back at home.
  • Secondly do not make any public nuisance of yourself, if you want to perform to a crowd of people, make sure that you do it sober and nothing that can be taken offensively, the Barbadians will report you to the police immediately if you are rude, obnoxious or otherwise “out of order”.
  • OK now for the drinks, seriously the drinks can be deadly, but only if someone has spiked them, make sure that you do not touch anything that looks like it has been tampered.
  • This one is very important to remember, where ever you go you will be annoyed by mini van taxis for a lift, say NO or just wave them on, if you are walking somewhere keep it that way. These people will try anything that they possibly can to get you into their cars, even if it means blurting swear words at you. Trust me, I promise you that you will be risking your life jumping into one of these death traps, they cram these things with as many people as possible, and then speed all over the place. Even if none of this is your fault, if the police get involved you could find yourself in a bit of a sticky situation and maybe even receiving some of the blame!

At least now you have some clear ideas what to avoid on your Barbados holidays, for smoother more relaxing Caribbean holidays try St Lucia or Antigua, and for something completely different and more spa oriented try Thailand holidays!
