Lanzarote hotels and things to do on holiday

The beautiful island of Lanzarote in the Canaries is well known for its incredible volcanic landscapes and breathtaking coastlines. Its stunning natural beauty is complemented by the many tourist activities and amenities on offer, from the restaurants, shops and clubs to top Lanzarote hotels. As a protected UNESCO site, there are various restrictions on the type and amount of development allowed on the island. This means that no high-rise apartments or condominiums are on the island and billboard advertising is not allowed. As a result, many Lanzarote hotels and villas tend to be more natural developments with enhanced privacy. In fact, many of the hotels offer so many amenities and such beautiful beaches that some visitors decide not to leave their resort. If you do decide to venture out, however, there are plenty of sights worth seeing.

Timanfaya National Park

Lanzarote’s MontaƱas del Fuego – or Fire Mountains – give this region of the island an almost martian look since the landscape is barren and desert-like. The mountains were created by volcanic eruptions in the 18th and 19th centuries that impacted this part of the island. There are plenty of rare plant species to marvel at in this fertile area and guided tours around the park will help you to make the most of the region – there is even the chance to view the landscape while riding a camel.

Jameos del Agua

Created by a volcanic eruption which took place over three thousand years ago, these caves have been turned into an underground complex, with a swimming pool, auditorium, restaurants, and gardens that have been designed to complement the natural look of the surrounding caves.

Lanzarote Aquarium

Get up close and personal with the sea life of the Canary Islands in this large, interactive aquarium. Native aquatic creatures, including warm water sharks, can be observed and interacted with in the aquarium’s three touching-pools.

Castillo de San Jose

This fortress was originally built to protect the island from pirates back in 1799 and is now a modern art gallery, including a restaurant with lovely views of the harbour.

With so many sights on offer, alongside the many restaurants, bars, shops and cheap hotels, your island holiday experience is guarenteed to be one to remember.
